There is a public boat launch here that may not have existed when Yuri took the trip. Take road 663 going north from highway 11. Instead of going thru the first nations community, circle to the left around the large sawmill. Turn left before you see the sawmill. You’ll circle back around to a north-south road just north of the first nations community. This gravel road ends at the river. Google Maps might be helpful.

Take-out: Just keep the mainland on your right, and you’ll be fine. Ft. Albany is on the south-east corner of Sullivan Island. On the topo map, it looks like you might be able to take the south channel around the island, but the channel is blocked at the Albany with an earthen dam and there isn’t much water. If you just keep the mainland on your right and take the north channel, you won’t have any issues with the delta. After going under some powerlines, you’ll get to the north-east corner of the island, turn right (south). Paddle down the east channel until you hit an earthen dam and a boat launch. You can see the airport from the top of the dam, which is also a road.

Rapids/Portages: We paddled in late July, but everyone told us the water was up. We had nothing to portage. At lower water there may have been a few places where you would need to drag your boat. The rapids on Yuri’s old MNR map are class 1 and easily run. There is no white water to speak of on this run.

Camping: Campsites are an issue. There are no designated campsites and there aren’t those ‘traditional’ spots you see when padding in the Canadian shield. Because you are in the Hudson Bay Lowlands, the river is a channel thru the clay soil. There are 10’ to 100’ high mud banks on either side. The ground slopes upward from the river to the base on the ‘cliffs’. The best camping is where there is a lot of gravel/pebbles/rock in the area between the river and the mud bank. If there is not a lot of stone, then the ground is either mud or swamp. We pitched our tent on the rocks where we could find a somewhat level spot, the tent always seemed to be sloped toward the river. Finding tent sites for a large group would be a challenge. You could try the woods and the bugs, but even the lesser mud banks can be a challenge, as we discovered when collecting wood.

Fishing: Fish where the creeks enter the river. We had limited success, but we aren’t big fishermen. We caught walleye and pike, but were told there are trout.

Travel time: We easily did the trip in 12 days, even with a wasted day paddling upstream to retrieve a forgotten camera. By the time we got to the Albany, we were paddling 4 to 5 mph. It has a pretty good current.

dheym@wowway.com
Doug Heymnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8705038022373932400.post-27197220587418281112021-10-12T08:11:02.766-05:002021-10-12T08:11:02.766-05:00hi Yuri

I spoke with Bob Davis, a Canuk paddler who returned to mooseonee along the coast, describing it as some of the worst nights he ever spent in the bush. I almost did it myself, but the natives were adamant. Four canoers had disappeared there a year previous to my visit. You can't really get lost in the delta--it was one of the best memories of my life waking up on a gravel bar to the low murmurs of a flock of sandhill cranes.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8705038022373932400.post-35431354079234409242013-02-01T10:01:26.635-05:002013-02-01T10:01:26.635-05:00Hi Yuri.....really enjoyed your blog..a lot of wor...Hi Yuri.....really enjoyed your blog..a lot of work.
I just started one maybe you could add something
www.dumoinewatershed.blogspot.com dumoinewatershedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11932134788429828589noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8705038022373932400.post-47745628549581449192012-01-10T10:04:31.562-05:002012-01-10T10:04:31.562-05:00thanks for the story and pics yuri. i paddled the...thanks for the story and pics yuri. i paddled the river as a camper with camp kandalore in summer 1984 from Lake St Joe (we were bussed in) to fort albany (flew out as you did). unf no pics - nothing. so it was nice to see yours.

certainly once we got out of the Sheild and into the Lowlands - we camped alot on sand bars on the river. perhaps the water was low at the time (we were mid july - mid aug). this had the benefit of being relatively bug free and there was plenty of dry driftwood for the fire.

marvellous times.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8705038022373932400.post-63745201684792161962012-01-05T03:27:44.123-05:002012-01-05T03:27:44.123-05:00Myself and 3 close friends are planning on canoein...Myself and 3 close friends are planning on canoeing the Albany River from Lake St. Joseph in July 2012! However im also an (aspiring) film maker and Im working on a film that would take place on the Albany River, I was wondering if any of the people here would be able to provide me with some pictures, stories, or description of interesting places on the river that could make for interesting highlights in the film. At this point I still have zero budget so I cant promis any monetary compensation but you would of couse receive a credit in the final film (assuming im successful in producing it)

I can be reached at stephenjames1515@gmail.com

thanks vary much in advanceStephenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06262925284110215956noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8705038022373932400.post-22349110255452688362010-05-04T19:16:26.621-05:002010-05-04T19:16:26.621-05:00JP, in case you check back, good luck on your trip...JP, in case you check back, good luck on your trip. Plan carefully for with 10 students, finding large and accessible campsites might be challenging. Mammammattawa, and Ghost River are certainly large and clear enough. Most of all, stay safe and drop another post when you're finished.
YuriYurihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00711763900793650167noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8705038022373932400.post-72415550814452067482010-05-04T09:26:22.945-05:002010-05-04T09:26:22.945-05:00Thanks Yuri for the great information and maps...I...Thanks Yuri for the great information and maps...I am taking a class of 10 students down the Albany along the same route as yours on June 4, 2010. Amazing how twenty five years later the river looks nearly the same as those pictures. I remember seeing on the Topo ghost river and being curious but there was nothing there (the water was very high this year maybe it was underwater or maybe we just missed it.) The last night you said you spent on the river there’s a picture of it on a gravel bar near shore. I stayed in the same spot on my last night im sure of it (firewood was a challenge) and so was navigating which was my responsibility that particular day. Fort Albany sounds unchanged the airport and all. Thank you for your stories and pictures.

PatrickAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8705038022373932400.post-14638494840850692072008-08-03T11:18:00.000-05:002008-08-03T11:18:00.000-05:00hey hello there im from fort albany i seee youer p...hey hello there im from fort albany i seee youer pic's there nice old pic'sAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
